Biography

Il Gardellino was founded by oboist Marcel Ponseele and flutist Jan De Winne in 1988. The ensemble consists of musicians who specialise in historical performance practice and whose work has received international recognition; their mastery of the subtleties of this repertoire is complete and immediate. As an ensemble they strive to distinguish themselves from similar groups through a combination of technical perfection and innovative interpretation. The work and creative spirit of J.S. Bach is at the centre of the ensemble’s preoccupations; at the same time, they are currently exploring a wide repertoire of other, more familiar works, as well as new, unjustly forgotten compositions. Il Gardellino has performed with great success at numerous festivals and concert halls in Europe, including Utrecht, Bruges, Antwerp, Prague, Innsbruck and Leipzig. He has also had more recent and continuing success in the United States, Israel, Latin America, South Korea and Japan. Il Gardellino records for the Accent and Passacaille labels.
