Het ensemble bestaat uit musici die gespecialiseerd zijn in de historische uitvoeringspraktijk en wier werk internationale erkenning heeft gekregen; hun beheersing van de subtiliteiten van dit repertoire is volledig en onmiddellijk. Als ensemble streven zij ernaar zich van soortgelijke groepen te onderscheiden door een combinatie van technische perfectie en vernieuwende interpretatie. Het werk en de creatieve geest van J.S. Bach staan centraal in de preoccupaties van het ensemble; tegelijkertijd verkennen ze momenteel een breed repertoire van andere, meer bekende werken, evenals nieuwe, ten onrechte vergeten composities. Il Gardellino heeft met groot succes opgetreden op talrijke festivals en concertzalen in Europa, waaronder Utrecht, Brugge, Antwerpen, Praag, Innsbruck en Leipzig. Hij heeft ook meer recente en aanhoudende successen geboekt in de Verenigde Staten, Isra\u00ebl, Latijns-Amerika, Zuid-Korea en Japan.
